We just returned a week or so ago from the Afghan Hound Club of America National Specialty in Lancaster, PA. The location changes from year to year for the National in Afghan Hounds - next year is scheduled for Sacramento California in October. Some breeds have a fixed location for their National Specialties, such as many of the terrier breeds which hold their shows at the hallowed Montgomery County Kennel Club in Philadelphia - the largest all-terrier show in the world. If you're a terrier fan, you really should see Montgomery at least once (I started in Airedales, and also showed Lakeland and Wire Fox terriers, so Montgomery will always hold a special place in my heart!)
For those of you not familiar with national specialties, let me explain. Specialty shows are shows for a single breed. Winning at a specialty is extra special for the breeders and owners who show there - not only are there usually many more dogs entered, but they are often judged by fellow breeders who know and appreciate the breed. And once a year, the national breed club (i.e. the Afghan Hound Club of America, in this case) holds a National Specialty show. Think of this as the Super Bowl of Afghan Hounds.
To a breeder, there are few thrills as great as winning his or her breed's National Specialty. It's better than winning at Westminster, better than the AKC/Eukanuba National Championship (except the nationals don't pay you $50,000 if you win!), and certainly better than winning at local shows. But hey - a win is a win and we like them all...
We had a great time at the Afghan Hound National - we didn't win Best of Breed, but our dogs looked nice, Posh and Rush did well (check out the NEWS page for details), and we had a great time seeing our friends from here in the U.S. and abroad. Always great to catch up with fellow Afghan Hound fanciers!
It's a peculiar thing, this hobby of dog shows. I was thinking I'd try to explain it, but that will have to wait for another time....

We cannot believe that the Rush x Halle puppies are old enough to be showing already!
Three of the puppies have made their debut in the ring and have done great! Jolie Glitterati "Paris"
started off with a RWB to a major at 6 months and 2 days old, Jolie Avant-Garde "Zappa" has won
puppy breeds and RWD and Jolie Haute Couture "Posh" has won multiple puppy group placements
and Best puppy. We are excited to see what the future holds for this pretty litter...More to come!
